Aviation Takeover? Former Cabinet Member of Donald Trump, Bayo Ogunlesi Pays Yemi Osinbajo A Courtesy Visit

Bayo Ogunlesi, Chairman & Managing Partner, Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) paid a courtesy visit to Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo today in Abuja.

Ogunlesi who most recently was a member of Donald Trump’s economy revival cabinet is an expert in the aviation industry having purchased the London Gatwick Airport.

In 2009, GIP bought the majority shares in London Gatwick Airport in a deal reportedly worth £1.455 billion. The Nigerian press has given Ogunlesi the nickname, “The Man Who Bought Gatwick Airport.”

In 2012, GIP also reportedly bought the Edinburgh Airport in Scotland in a move which signalled his level of interest in the aviation industry.

Ogunlesi, who hails from Sagamu area of Ogun State was on a visit to the Vice President and insinuations have been going around on the possible takeover of the Nigerian aviation industry that needs an injection of new blood and money.

Experts have been of the opinion that a private investor will handle the Nigerian aviation industry more holistically with the challenge of stern economic variables. Ogunlesi, being an entrepreneur himself and a business tycoon wholly understands the nature of the industry in a yet to be confirmed possible takeover.

The son of Nigeria’s first Professor of Medicine has a name in the industry and has set a standard which when built upon will lead Nigeria’s aviation industry to greater heights after a long hiatus of quality service delivery, customer understanding and the challenge of dilapidated infrastructure.

Private investment in the Nigerian aviation industry has been present but with the major airport in the country, the Murtala Muhammed International Airport still under government control in a country that has shown an interest in perhaps more priorities, visits of this nature become imperative as all opinions and insinuations are in support of a takeover.

Ogunlesi who has gained a lot of experience in the industry is a man whose injection of exposure, class and money into the industry will go a long way in revamping an aviation industry that is almost in a state of comatose. The things discussed in the meeting are yet to be known but are viably linked to a possible takeover which by every meaningful standard will be a plus to Nigeria.
