A family of fourteen in Brasilia, capital city of Brazil has added a new boy to their familial heritage of a genetic abnormality, polydactyl.
Polydactyl is a genetic abnormality that leads to a person having six fingers or toes. The De Silva that are now famous for what should for a normal human be a source of strangeness has stood out wonderfully unique among lots as they proudly carry their family’s heritage.Polydactyl can only be managed surgically by amputating one of the fingers, usually simpler few weeks after birth but the Brazilian family are not having any of that as they have turned a weakness to their most pleasant strength.
The bouncing baby boy, named Vinicius was found out to be a boy in the thirteenth week of pregnancy and from that moment, his parents prayed he should be born with six fingers to continue the family heritage.
Since Vinicius was born we noticed that his fingers are perfectly functional. He is already trying to grab things, so all his fingers work normally.” said Alessandro, the boy’s father.
Polydactyl has been researched to occur in just one in every 1000 births. There are a series of mutations that result in this condition but in the case of having extra fingers and toes, there’s a wrong expression of a gene which leads to the patterning of digits.
“If either your mum or your dad has extra digits, then you stand a 50/50 chance of getting the same type.”
It’s never been an issue for us having six fingers. We like having six fingers.”
The coolest thing about having six fingers being able to hold a lot of things at once.” said Guillherme, the first child of the family.
His cousin Maria added: “The best thing about having six fingers is I can play more keys [on the piano].
And goalkeeper Joao Assis said: “I’m able to reach some balls when people can’t. For me it’s easier to hold the ball, I have more grip and my hands covers more, so it’s difficult for the ball to escape.”
Alessandro’s grandfather Assis is responsible for turning the family’s fate around from deficiency into something that offers them great efficiency.
“My grandfather transformed having six fingers into a valuable thing. So much so that he wrote a book where his hands are on the cover.
“And he composed music and everything he did carried the six finger family symbol. He transformed the six fine thing into a family brand.” Assis said.
