Ondo State Governor, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu(SAN) in a bid to improve power supply in the state, has constituted a Technical Team on Independent Power Supply Initiative.

The governor revealed this through his Special Assistant on New Media, Allen Sowore. Listed to be the Chairman of the team is Engineer Tunji Ariyomo, Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Utilities with Engineer O.J Adelola, General Manager of Ondo State Electricity Board lined up to be its secretary. Other people that comprise the team are: Mr. Femi Akarakiri, Senior Special Assistant On Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Ayo Sotinrin and Mr. Tope Runsewe.

The team has been charged to map out a framework for powering the State Secretariat, State Specialist Hospital, Streetlights and other Essential Services in Akure, the State capital.

Ariyomo, who doubles as Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Utilities explained that the Governor is having sleepless nights over the state of electricity supply in every part of the State, especially the four Local Government Areas in the Southern Senatorial district, which have been disconnected from the National Grid for almost six years. The governor informed that discussions are ongoing with BEDC officials and interfacing with the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

“We are working on the possibility of encouraging the private sector driven provision of Independent Power Project for businesses, industries, unconnected communities and government facilities so as to reduce the pressure of grid-based demands.

“We are talking to investors who can take over power supplies for our essential services covering streetlights, the State Specialist Hospital, the state secretariat and Government House, and power them.

“National regulation is favourable. If you generate less than 1mw today, you are exempted from licences.

“If an investor does four megawatts or more with an independent licence, we may be able to free more energy for other parts of the state”, he added.

Governor Akeredolu is primed to taking Ondo State to the next level and has always shown a desire for the goals ahead and constituting a team of this nature at this period is highly necessary and called for owing to the state’s electricity challenges.
